If you waive a player to free agency, you are still responsible for that player’s salary until he is picked up by another franchise. There are two (2) choices on how to be charged for this.
1. Take on 50% of the contract spread over the years remaining.
2. Total buyout. You are charged 50% of total contract left in one lump sum. This option is not available after trade deadline.
If you choose option #1 and the waived player remains unsigned, you must continue to count the charged amount of salary against your salary cap until his contract expires. Once the player is picked up and re-signed by any franchise, you will be responsible for the lesser of:
a) 50% of the old contract (on an annual basis) OR
b) the net difference between the player’s old contract (with your team) and the player's new contract. (option #2)
If the player’s contract with his new team is higher than his contract with your team, you will not be obligated to pay any further reparations to the player and thus no penalty to your salary cap.
*Contracts are compared on a year-to-year basis, not in sum total, unless you have opted for total buyout and a new contract has been signed on that player.
The waiver period is 7 days. So you may not bid on a player that you have dropped unless the bidding starts one week after you have dropped that player.
If you decide to waive a player, you must list them under this section: warningtrackbaseball.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=letgo. This will make permanent your decision to waive a player to free agency. Once posted, you may not cancel the drop. You must also drop them on Fantrax.
